Rising Stars Academy
On Tuesday, December 12, 2017 student chefs from the South Lake Bistro Culinary Arts program visited Rising Stars Academy in Center Line. They toured the facility and were served a creole style lunch. Rising Stars Academy services adults with special needs ages 18-26 teaching life and employment skills through hands on training in the area of culinary arts as well as possibly providing opportunities for employment at various companies. Rising Stars Academy is a charter school. It is housed in an elementary school that is part of the Center Line school district. Rising Stars Academy utilizes all areas of the school as well as the grounds surrounding the school. They have greenhouses, raise their own fowl, and utilize fresh eggs from same.
Mexicantown - Day of Dead Celebration
On Tuesday, November 2, 2017 Culinary Arts students joined Spanish students on a field trip to Mexicantown in Detroit. Students stopped at Honeybee Market, St. Anne's Church, and lunched at Xochimilco's Restaurant.

Dexter Knives
On Tuesday, October 10, 2017 Chef Ryan of Dexter Knives visited our Foods and Culinary Arts classes. He is a corporate chef for Dexter Knives in addition to occasionally traveling to provide presentations about Dexter knives.
Yates Cider Mill
Culinary Arts and Foods students visited Yates Cider Mill to learn how apple cider is created. Students watched a short video, were provided with a free donut and a small apple container filled with juice, as well as witnessed the pressing of apples to make apple cider.
Pertaining to Yates Cider Mill, did you know:
- 270 gallons of cider is produced each pressing?
- it takes 30 minutes for each pressing so two pressings each hour resulting in 540 gallons of cider an hour?
- the presses run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 6 days a week?
- that Yates produces 600 DOZEN of donuts PER HOUR?

On Tuesday, September 26, 2017 our Culinary Arts and Foods students visited the Jiffy mix plant in Chelsea, Michigan. They viewed a video about the history of Jiffy, took a tour of the plant, and were provided FREE samples of Jiffy mix. The students also met the owner of Jiffy, Mr. Howdy Holmes, grandson of the Jiffy mix creator, Ms. Mabel Holmes.
